Since 1990, Church Street School for Music and Art has been dedicated to arts education for children of all ages and is the only non-profit school for the arts in Lower Manhattan. They lean toward a “process oriented” approach, which means giving kids the tools and freedom they need to foster their own unique creativity. Music classes use movement, aural training, and instrumental improvisation based on the Dalcroze method, which was created in the early 1900s and is widely praised by both Sergei Rachmaninoff and George Balanchine. Art classes stress experimentation with traditional and nontraditional materials, from clay and paint to fabric and found objects. Faculty members are highly-trained and skilled musicians and artists.
